Reading data from CAN without sending messages?

My car reports fuel level on the CAN bus on some interval. Apparently it’s reported in a passive message with the header 54A. I found this information here. Using the CAN analyzer I’ve found messages with this header and the second byte does seem to decode into my fuel level based on my estimate. However, I can’t find any way to act on or log this information because everything requires me to send a payload via a PID or CAN message. How can I get this data fed into AutoPi to trigger events?
